As we all know, in our daily life, wood and wood powder can be burned directly. So why do some people use pellet machines to convert wood into pellets before burning? Isn't this a waste of time and money? Do you have the same question as me? Then let's find out the reasons with the editor.

First of all, we need to understand that the calorific value is related to mass and has nothing to do with volume. The calorific value of wood chips is about 4000 kcal/kg, while the mass of one cubic meter of wood chips is about 200 kg, and the mass of wood chip pellets is about 900 kg/ton.

1. The volume of burning raw materials causes changes in equipment investment costs

For example, a boiler with a capacity of one million kcal requires 250 kg of wood chip pellets if pellets are used as firewood. The volume of 250 kg of wood chip pellets is 0.27 m³. If wood chip pellets are transported mechanically, the conveyor and combustion chamber we need are very small, so the overall cost of the equipment will be reduced. On the contrary, if we burn 250 kg of wood directly as firewood, the volume of wood chips required is 1.25m³, and the fuel inlet and combustion chamber of the boiler become 4 times larger. Then our investment cost also rises linearly.
